And a question..

I am thinking of buying a new camera (digital SLR). My shortlist is this or this or this or - maybe- this. What should I get? I need to make my mind up as I have a chance to buy it next week when I am in the US and everyone says that is the cheapest thing to do. (Are they right?)

Hello Mary Plain.
I havent a clue but Dr Joolz will know.
I have just bought my daughter a non digital Nikon for her 16th birthday and she thinks it is the utterly latest thing which is rather strange.

part of me undertands that, Dr Kate, as I get real pangs of nostalgia when I pick up my old SLR.. and I do wonder about the change to digital in terms of the pleasures of going through an old box of photos.. (am enjoying your blog v much, btw, even though no tsaying much!)

I don't know much about cameras believe it or not and bought the Canon you cite on the advice of my husband. However I do love it. You could look at photos on Flickr and see what ones you like and what they were taken with ... also look in the forums there. I think lots of the Nikon ones I have seen are excellent. Bear in mind you can buy a different make of lens to the camera and can buy the lens separately from the camera. This allows you to choose appropriately for the kind of photo you want to take. Leave money over for a bag and a very high densirt memory card.
One disadvantage of buying in the states is the constant need for an adapter for the plug. Also check the guarantee rights.

5 meant high density memory card. I thunk you should buy the most memory you can affotrd so you can take high density pics and also loads of pics as it is a vind if you run out of space.
