And what I was going to say today..
I have been thinking about online shopping, particularly since Victoria Carrington posted these links to amazing laptop bags. What would you buy online? I am not talking here about security and stuff like that, but what do you want to hold in your hand before you buy rather than just seeing on a website? My problem with the laptop bags is that I need to touch them and see them, maybe even smell them, and certainly try them on, to choose. Books I will risk online, also music- even without always having heard it- but bags, that just feels wrong.. Where do you draw the line?

Wouldn't buy a bag online. Well only after I'd seen it in the flesh. Yes, books online OK. Clothes, no. Partners, no. Ideas, maybe. Flights, train tickets, yes. Camera...wanted to see it in the shop first (got it cheaper online): and that purchase made me think of future retailing. A sort of inverted Argos system, in which you go to the shop, feel the surface, gauge the heft, see the size for real and then go online to order. BUT, as someone was very quick to point out, where would the shop make profit. Mmmmm...thinks....
That is indeed the problem. If we treat shops as somewhere to see merchandise but buy on line, does the whole system collapse?
nianvny..
nianvny..
Hmmm, now that i live in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, i buy everything online ... food, clothes, shoes, beauty products, stationary, books and music and antique wine glasses. I have also been known to buy a laptop and iPod online, along with a very cool computer bag.
I tend to do exactly what you've suggested Mary Plain....i use shops to scope out the things/trends that i then buy online. The stress of having people touch and bump into me, the glare of the lights, the noise is now all too much.
Not sure where this leaves our beloved capitalist system. If it's all a global flow, i guess the money is just flowing in and out of some new rockpools?

I think I would buy most things online. I have bought CDs, books, clothes, bags, jewellery, a sony walkman, underwear, cosmetics, tights, holidays, hotel bookings, flights. I buy online stuff I cannot buy from anywhere near me or stuff that is cheaper, or just cos I am bored I will go Internet shopping when I should be working.
I think I would not buy shoes as I would have to try them on. Would not buy a car or house.
I have had a few disappointments from E bay so have gone off that a bit.

Apologies if this appers twice. AM having some difficulty tonight with Blogger..
another issue for me is instant gratification. If I am in the middle of working through a new author- usually of the detective variety- I head off down to the bookshop for an immediate fix while ordering a backup stock from Amazon for when that runs out..

Oh I buy as much as I can online, simply because it is usually cheaper than the high st, although I wouldn't buy white goods, I don't know why, maybe its the horrendous draw of those out of town barns, I do ebay a lot, buying and selling, no major problems and Guy, yes I also got my wife online too, although she came free from Ukraine, and I must say she was probably the best bargain!!!
